Al-Kawthar

This is the Arabic text of the Tafsīr al-Jalālayn of Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī and Jalāl al-Dīn as-Suyūṭī as the OpenITI corpus has it, from the copy of altafsir.com that the COBHUNI project of Hamburg University took: only the commentary on the verses, with no introductions, no edition and no pagination. Nobody has compared it with a printed book or a manuscript, and no scholar has reviewed it. Each passage stands beside the verses it comments on, which are the Qur’ān text of Tanzil, shown as it is there. Beneath each passage stands its English translation by Feras Hamza, as the copy of Tarteel’s Quranic Universal Library has it; nobody has compared that copy with the printed book either.

Verse 1

We have assuredly given you, O Muhammad (s), Abundance — [the name of] a river in Paradise and his [the Prophet’s] pool around which his community shall gather; al-kawthar also means the abundant good [that has been given to the Prophet], such as prophethood, the Qur’ān, intercession, and the like.

Verse 2

So pray to your Lord, the prayer of the Festival of Immolation (‘īd al-nahr), and sacrifice, your offering.

Verse 3

Indeed it is your antagonist, your hater, who is the severed one, refraining from all [acts of] good, or the one whose line of offspring will be severed [by his not having any]: this was revealed regarding al-‘Āsī b. Wā’il, who called the Prophet (s) al-abtar, ‘the severed one’, when his son al-Qāsim died.
